ocr: In 1993, - the Seychelles returnedto multiparty democracy after 16 years of one-party socialist rule under President René. As prime minister, he had seized complete power in a coup just one year after independence. Divisions within the opposition in the 1993 elections resultedin René being confirmedas president. His old party, - renamed' the SPPF,received the majority vote. In a major change ofideology and policy, the government has made wide-ranging social and economic reforms,including privatizations and the legalization oftrade unions.
